In self powered schools, meditation is part of the religion. Shinran rejected the self power schools, but he never stopped his Tendai practice. We tend to go what is familiar. I advocate meditation. Why, because it is a healthy practice, like Tai Shi, Qui Gung. In the Modern era many practice Yoga. It is a way we in modern times become connected. In Shinran’s time, even books where state of the art technology.
One misconception about meditation is one can gain enlightenment and become a Buddha, just by sitting there. I don’t think so. Obtaining Buddha requires Karmic Action, being active in the real world.
Buddhist meditation techniques have become increasingly popular in the wider world, with many non-Buddhists taking them up for a variety of reasons. There is considerable homogeneity across meditative practices – such as breath meditation and various recollections that are used across Buddhist schools,
The Buddha is said to have identified two paramount mental qualities that arise from wholesome meditative practice:
“Serenity” or “tranquility” (Pali: samatha) which steadies, composes, unifies and concentrates the mind; “insight” (Pali: vipassana) which enables one to see, explore and discern “formations” (conditioned phenomena based on the five aggregates).
We explore basic meditation techniques such as breathing, posture, and basic theory. It includes sitting, walking and chanting meditation. This is especially appropriate for beginners wishing to explore Buddhist meditation.
When Shinran decided to become Honen’s disciple. He meditated on the image of Kannon Bodhisattva and in a few days was answered. This answered came as a visualization meditation, not a magic, “Kannon God” answered me. The Kannon Statue acted as a psychological fulcrum of mindfulness of Buddha resolve.
Amida Samadhi Meditation: What meditation is for is to help us realize reality about ourselves. When we start to see ourselves as we actually are and accept one another as we actually are, then we have a working basis. However, for many people today, meditation, mindfulness and awareness have ceased to perform this function. They have, instead, become medications – In self powered schools: ways of escaping from what we actually are and abolishing the symptoms that are a natural consequence of what we are doing. To this extent – and it is a considerable one – what pass for meditation, mindfulness and awareness have come to function in quite the opposite manner to that originally intended. They have become a distraction from our everyday symptoms rather than a penetration into them. Were we to penetrate into them we would perceive how crazy our life is and we would want to change it. Contemporary mindfulness, however, is largely intended to enable us to bear it longer.
When Queen Vedehi meditated, she did so on the features of Amida Buddha. Her realization was the awakening of her true self Buddha Nature. In essence the Sukhavati Sutra’s and The Queens karma, allowed her to realize her Awakening and obtaining Pure Land (Bodhi Mind).
The is not much of a difference in thinking, “Other Power” is still our practice of Faith, “Self Power is inescapable” because we all live in the mundane world and we must be active no matter what. Tian Luan said Nembutsu practice that is not engaged
is not proper practice of Nembutsu. We are still Buddhists and we must make the effort to be Buddhists none the less. Varied teachings are like varied medicines for wellness and well being. With out effort how do we obtain True Faith? Namo Amida Butsu is our practice.
How is meditation self power? Since meditation is inert and we sit and sharpen our minds, with out being active in the world, meditation is not properly established. The problem with self powered schools is elite thinking and elite indulgences.
Meditation is only as good or bad as the Karma of the mediator. Samadhi in motion is concentration of Buddha while working or walking or doing something one can concentate. Samadhi at Rest is like ZaZen. Taking your daily life meditation and finding various “Legitimate techniques to meditate.”
Peaceful Mind, Buddha resolve, Healthy Practice, reasoning a Sutra, daily life solution, Stress reduction. Those who are determined to study the Dharma should pay heed to this point. Buddha Recitation — Essence and Practice
“Buddha Recitation-practice” means believing that one has true faith and a Buddha named Amitabha, but not yet realizing that “this Mind makes Buddha, this Mind is Buddha.” It consists of resolutely seeking rebirth in the Pure Land and reciting as earnestly as possible.
“Buddha Recitation-essence,” on the other hand, means believing and understanding that Amitabha Buddha of the West inherently exists in full within our mind, is created by our mind, and making this sacred name — inherently existing in full within our mind and created by our mind — the focus of our recitation, without a moment of neglect.”
In other words, “Buddha Recitation-practice” is the method of those who do not understand anything about meaning or essence, who just believe that there is a Land of Ultimate Bliss and a Buddha named Amitabha, and who fervently and earnestly recite the Buddha’s name seeking rebirth there.
“Buddha Recitation-essence” is the method of those who practice in an identical manner, but who also deeply realize that the Pure Land and Amitabha Buddha are all in the True Mind, manifested by the pure virtues of the True Mind.
The True Mind is Amida Samhadi on obtaining Shinjin: True Faith.
